Timo Werner has become one of the most-wanted young strikers in world football right now. Many huge clubs have been drawing links with him left, right and centre. Recent reports have linked Werner with a move to Real Madrid and that is the one that won’t make too much sense.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane has already made it clear that he isn’t looking for a striker anytime soon. The Frenchman recently told reporters: “Absolutely not, I don’t need to sign a striker.”
He was pretty much upfront about it and sounded firm. And that probably rules out anything that is brewing about Werner to Real in the media in recent days. But it isn’t just because of Zidane’s comments that the move won’t make sense.
So far this season, Karim Benzema looks to be back at his flowing best. Zidane’s compatriot has been almost scoring for fun for a vast majority of the campaign. He has found the back of the net a total of 16 times in all competitions for the club, also racking up a total of seven assists while playing 24 assists.
This is an improvement from last season, when Benzema had scored 30 times in all competitions. He made 53 appearances and with half of the season to go currently, Benzema looks set to shatter that record from last campaign.
The second-choice striker has been Luka Jovic. The former Benfica and Eintracht Frankfurt man is yet to completely settle in. But he is still 22 and is still very new to the club. Playing behind Benzema isn’t helping him and he is taking his time to adapt. He has a tally of just a single goal in all competitions this season.
As for Werner, he has done very well under new RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann this season. The German has now settled to a 4-4-2 shape, with Werner playing as the second-striker beside Yurary Poulsen- who is more of a target man.
While playing upfront, Werner has impressed with a tally of 23 goals in all competitions. He also has ten assists to his name, playing a total of 25 games. In the Bundesliga, he has 24 goal contributions to his name. Those are very impressive numbers.
Werner did start off the season while playing on the left- a position that he has played in the past. It was a game against Union Berlin and Werner did score in that game, helping his side pick up a 4-0 win.
The left-wing spot at the Santiago Bernabeu is already occupied by a summer signing in Eden Hazard. Young Vinicius Junior is climbing up the ladder and Real can’t afford to hinder any of the Brazilian’s development either. Isco has been playing on the left-wing, having been used six times on the left.
There are hardly any spaces for a player like Werner to take up. With many other clubs after his signature, he has so many options in front of him to make a wise decision. As much as his goals tally is impressive for a club like Real Madrid, it isn’t the right fit.
